A trumpet player of exotically spicy Swiss-Indian ancestry, Martin Dahanukar knows how to give his music a dreamy, poetic touch. On “Traumesrauschen”, his new album whose title figuratively translates to ‘the murmurs of dreams’, Dahanukar has now turned to voicings with a mystical, mysterious and almost cinematic feel to them, vibes that carry us off to images of flickering big-city lights. As with his preceding work, here too he makes no effort to conceal the echoes reminiscent of Miles Davis, a major artistic influence. And yet, the dawning days of Jazz Rock recalled so vividly on “Scent Of Jungle” have yielded to flashing associations with such works as the Miles Davis soundtrack to Louis Malle’s film “Elevator to the Gallows”. With the help of his newly aligned quartet, Martin Dahanukar manages to create audiophonic scenes whose arcs of suspense bring back kaleidoscopic memories of the still-life shots found in the French New Wave style. As he explains it: “The main thing is not to lose my voice and to disappear in the tangle.” while he immerses himself in the indigo-hued ‘blue notes’ of Jazz. The listener is released to dwell on intricate tunes in which this lyrically reflective melody-maker files away to perfect the listening experience. The earthy drive is provided by percussionist Willy Kouton and Philipp Moll on double bass, while Michael Haudenschild on piano and Fender Rhodes lends the music its lyrical breadth and the space for intriguing trumpet-playing.
