With “Different Rooms” this sax man has now chosen a new musical course that banks on the dialog between generations. On the one hand, this current production offers encounters with a number of young German musicians like the acclaimed team from Public Jazz Lounge, arranger and keyboarder Ralf Schmid, trumpet player Joo Kraus, as well as Martin Scales . On the other, Joe Gallardo, represents the generation that Pee Wee Ellis now calls his own. So it's only logical that the music on this album forges a link between today's Nu Jazz Sounds and some cover versions of timeless classics from the '60s, '70s and '80s. Titles such as the Marvin Gaye smash hit “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, Sting’s “All Four Seasons” or even Stevie Wonder compositions like “Boogie On Reggae Woman” and “You Haven’t Done Nothin’ ” have been reworked without exception by PJL arranger Ralf Schmid, whereas Pee Wee Ellis let the spirit take him and contributed additional songs of his own making. For instance, “Blue Bell Pepper” calls up visions of the crime series fad that dominated US TV in the '60s and '70s.
